Activating Your Hedge of Protection
In I Peter 5:8, we are warned in Scripture that Satan is moving all about seeking those whom he may devour--and one of his primary goals is to rob you of your spiritual joy and victory. I Peter 5:8 tells us that he looking to devour you spiritually and that comes from the Greek word, katapiein, which means to rob you or destroy you spiritually.
Since God knows us and knows our areas of spiritual battle and conflict, He has also chosen to gift each of us with two special spiritual weapons: the hedge of protection and the hedge of thorns. Let's begin by focusing on the teaching concerning the "hedge of protection."
The teaching about the hedge of protection comes from the first chapter of the book of Job when it says: Job 1:5 "And it came about when the days of feasting had completed their cycle, that Job would send and consecrate them, rising up early in the morning and offering burnt offerings according to the number of them all." This was referring to Job placing a hedge of protection around his children. In Job 1:10 it says, "Hast thou not made a hedge about him and his house and all that he has on every side?"
The hedge of protection literally means "that which surrounds like a fence--made to protect that which is in it from the enemy on the outside." The hedge is composed of protective angels and the reference for that is found in Matthew 4. When we learn to erect the hedge of protection around those whom we love, we discover the first of our supernatural weapons of warfare.
We also learn that the hedge of protection can become ineffective and powerless if we permit Satan and sin to have the victory in our personal spiritual lives. Here are three things that can cause the hedge to become inefective:
1. Parental sin.
2. Chastisement (discipline on God's part in the life of a believer.) Isaiah 5:5 "Let me tell you what I am going to do to my vineyard, I will remove its hedge and it will be consumed."
3. Willful sin on someone's part.
Job was given as our Biblical example of someone who utilized the hedge of protection for victory in his personal and family life. God chose Job because of these attributes in his personal life:
1. Morally pure and blameless.
2. Upright in his conscience.
3. Feared and reverenced God.
4. Hated evil.
5. Faithful in his leadership.
Why not begin to discipline your spiritual life in such a way that you can find the glorious victory that the Lord has provided in your hedge of protection...
